These giant balls of mucus may seem like a bizarre sight in the open ocean, but all this snot serves a purpose, both for the tiny creatures that produce it and for the entire ocean ecosystem!

This Beautiful House Is Made of Snot
783 Shikime 79 mijë
how can a creature from the deep sea be a model organism? are we breeding them in labs? could we not study their snot houses in labs then?
I wish I could just build a house out of... well, not snot. Maybe something more durable like bone... hey, there's no spooky imagery connected with finger nails... at least not until you build a whole house, ok maybe not build a house. But still maybe.
I'm sorry Hank, no matter how many times you said "tail" I kept seeing "tongue"
What is this round creature at 2:48 ??
Wonder how much of that 'snow' is now plastics that is on its way to the seafloor?
Uhhh yeah I'll have a boneless relative
Please name it after Hedwig.
So basically, we need to make a co2 absorbing mucus to pull unnecessary amounts of co2 out of the air. My guess is oil and water and a living noise, to make the mucus.
I would just like to point out that scientists got us into this crisis concerning carbon in the atmosphere, ( fossil fuels, plastics, nuclear weapons,ect..) so I am counting on them to get us out of it. In the mean time I will be living life as normal.
"closest living boneless relatives" I'm no taxonomist but 'close' sounds like a bit of a stretch
@Svensk Otaku that was my point
Closest doesn't mean close...
That’s whack but really interesting
They're also reducing the acidity
I'm impressed that you said all that with a straight face lol. All hail our new-found saviors, the snot palaces?
Oh so it's interesting when a tadpole makes a snot bubble! but when I do it, I get told to get a tissue...
So larvaceans are our cousin?
Can we all take a moment to appreciate how extremely sci-fi that scanning device looks in operation? 1:18
I’m just expecting him to say “Hey guys! Joe here!”
Very sustainable housing 🤣🤣
So when a sea creature makes their mansion out of snot they say it's a work of art but when I do it it's a sin against God. Make up your mind
what a fascinating fellow
You cannot collab enough with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and MBARI! ♥️♥️♥️
I would love to see Hank to a whole video expanding on his TikTok rant about ice being a rock and water being lava! :)
Finally, a good use for nose glue!
neat little creatures! About the carbon lifecycle effect, as most (all?) of what they capture in their ne(s)t is "marine snow", that would be going down anyway, what makes us think the fact that it gets trapped in the discarded snot ball makes the capture more effective or durable? Thanks in advance to whomever can answer :).
Idk about a snot palace, but Jeremy from 5th grade definitely built something under the chair. He wasn´t praised for it though. Poor Jeremy...
BOOGER MUSEUM.
“Boneless relatives”
love to learn something new and very interesting from yours videos!
They can make a structure that big in less than an hour.. That is completely bonkers.
I thought an inflatable snot palace was something for kids birthday parties at the park
Is not ;p
booger house!!!
I assumed it's made of jelly, but it snot
The snot palace is by far our favorite deep-sea house! Thanks to SciShow and the Monterey Bay Aquarium for collaborating on this episode to help more people learn about the giant larvacean in all its mucous-y glory.
snot is snack
This vid was awesome
TY ☺️
Bruh what?
So amazing what can be accomplished when you aren't constantly fighting gravity.
Your use of the word snot instead of mucus is very disturbing.
Why so risky? Just google RJVX12 and dont worry about crypto rates
Guys you didnt know about RJVX12?
RJVX12 bring me 300% profit because of Tesla pump
RJVX12 algorithm is the best, there is no point in arguing with this
Thanks god i knew about this unique algorithm RJVX12
Guys, you are tired, before doing reviews, you first read about RJVX12 algorithm
just google RJVX12 algorithm and don't worry
RJVX12 algorithm is my choice, i dont worry about BTC rates at all
Nice video! What about RJVX12 algorithm review?
is there really still a person who does not know about the existence of RJVX12 algorithm?
Why worry about cryptocurrency quotes if there is RJVX12 algorithm?
instant snot home
The more we learn about the ocean world the more interesting it becomes. Unfortunately, we may destroy it by acidification, pollution, and over exploitation before we really understand this major carbon sink for the planet..
Omg, did anyone else notice it got knocked out by falling debris right after it dropped its snot palace? Lol
I can always come to scishow to escape politics and social controversy
You gotta rename the channel to "bodilyfunctionshow"
Boneless pizza is so 2020... say hello to our oldest Boneless relatives
And here is the little booger's love song : alfirst.info/load/Z46jn4zXetujd5c/video
So this mansion is snot a joke?
"... the marine snow, which rains down from above."
The camera was sinking.
I wonder how exactly the Larvacean built the house so fast in less than an hour. The video also shows that even small creatures have big impact on the ecosystem, which is mind-blowing
Much love for the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and all the work MBARI does, god i love the deep ocean so much :)
Surely they're not our CLOSEST living boneless relatives... You forget about the invertebrates known as Homo Sapiens Republicanum.
3:12 In order to create the snot they need carbon which they get from the marine snow. So if they didn't make the snot, wouldn't the carbon would just fall to the floor anyway in the form the marine snow?
Mucus? No it'snot
Calling that snot is like calling a spiders silk piss I dunno about all thaaaaaat
Is that similar to what hagfish do?
LOVE how MBAs social media presence is always heralded by ocean puns
Crab Check: Yes. There are crabs in this video.
See, no need to go dig on the moon while we're floating on diamonds!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 loved discovering this new Creature - one of our house mates - in the home named Earth!!!
My eyes can't even process what I just watched.
.
Cor!...date.
Wow I never knew there's such a thing. Amazing.
ok, marine zoology is fascinating AF. it's literally like going to an alien planet.
That's a beauty. Thanks, guys.
Monday: Toilet plants. Tuesday: Snot houses. Wednesday: Vomit propulsion?
I had to check just to be sure lol, unfortanatly no vomit propulsion, would be pretty cool though.
And TADA, instant house! - I laugh every time I hear it.
What’s the difference between a loogie and a booger? The first one’s mucus and the other’s not ;-)
Those critters on the sea floor eat some funky stuff😜
this but for space debris
Me: looking away from phone waiting for video to start SciShow:thanking Monterey Bay Aquarium "they hope you larva this episode" Me: head snaps back* NO! ...no
If only I could mold my own home from my own bodily fluids, but even that the government would try to tax it, probably
Coming soon on zillow: a 3 bed 2.5 bath larvacean snot palace with an oceanside view
cool.
Sounds like an underwater spider. Except the spider does not waste its net each time it has done its job.
Okay, you've convinced me. I'm going to build me a giant underwater slime palace in Minecraft. To the swamp!!!
I'd live in a snot palace if the rent was low enough.
Wish you explained the model organism stuff abit
I prefer the term "Mucous Mansion". But that's just me, I have a thing for alliteration. Cool vid! 🌱
We're more closely related to boneless chicken
🅱️oneless
I'm currently drunk and intend to get drunker, but that doesn't make that stupid "larvae" pun okay, Hank.
I can't be the only one wishing for a little less gross science... can I?
what about using something similar to snot
So snot really what it seems hehe Ok I'll show myself out
'Snot Palaces? Our house during seasonal allergies. S'not such a crazy concept.🤪
That marine snow carbon cycle is super interesting, thanks for the episode! I'm trying to imagine how we could use the oceans to grow, cultivate and fertilize more plankton that then would have to be sequestered as marine snow. I would think this is the only way we could sequester carbon in big enough quantities because for anything land based there just isn't enough land. But the oceans are huge if you could use a fleet of autonomous "sea tractors" to fertilize phytoplankton and sequester carbon.
I thought a booger was a poor building material, but it's snot.
So many great names for punk-rock bands in this video.
1:19 I wander if this guy tells all the other giant larvaceans that he was probed by aliens
