6 of the Biggest Single-Celled Organisms

When you picture a single cell, you probably imagine something super tiny that you had to look at through a microscope. But, there are some huge exceptions to this rule. And we really do mean huge.

I’ve found a Valonia cell before, I was at a beach on Key West, and swam out a dozen meters or so with my sister. I remember thinking I’d found a pearl or something. I think my dad tried to feed it to a chicken or something lol

I wonder if it's safe to eat Valonia Ventricosa.. It would be cool if they're safe to eat, and taste good. Who knows, they may end up being a super food someday. The idea of eating a single celled organism that you could actually feel in your mouth and chew is pretty exotic, and sounds like something you would get from a restaurant like Noma in Copenhagen, Denmark.

It makes me wonder if the increased pressure at deep ocean areas can contribute to the development of these giga-cells..? Each of these organisms demonstrates some pretty key developments which likely led to multicellular life: Having multiple nuclei, a pseudo-circulatory system & distribution of functions (the precursor to organs). Even the intriguing way that Mermaid's Wineglasses use messenger RNA to delegate complex tasks is potential evidence towards the RNA World hypothesis in Abiogenesis (the study of the origin of life). Umm... _Our_ cells are interconnected & constantly communicate with their neighbours. There's Paracrine communication where a cell releases messenger molecules (like Chemokines & Cytokines) into the intracellular spaces nearby, it then travels across to a neighboring cell & triggers a receptor on it's surface (making it a Ligand). As well, cells sometime extrude little tubes called gap junctions (too small for anything other than electrolytes & water molecules), which allow neighbors to synchronise their functions. Our Immune cells also have proteins analogous to proteins on the surface of other cells, which they use to 'taste' / recognise body cells, which are supposed to be there, vs invader cells, which aren't.

I don't see how heaps of sells being super-connected would make it a singular cell. You said so yourself, CELLS, as in plural, if there's more than one cell, super-connected or not, it's not a single-celled organism. At least that's how I see it.
