Organisms have evolved many clever forms of armor so that they can be ready for whatever nature throws at them. And us flimsy humans can learn to enhance our armor by taking inspiration from some of these creatures, and not necessarily the ones you'd expect!

Animals Inspiring the Armor of the Future
2 243 Shikime 226 mijë
Bruh, Conk...
This video is just saddening when you think about how many species are going extinct. The things we could learn from them, the life saving technologies we could develope if we studied instead of destroyed.
So Chiton eye armor is basically going to let us have a HUD that shows the red dots of enemy movement like Master Chief...sweet
Let me get this right.....we knew scale mail armor was a thing for like 500 years, but your just now noticing that layers have a benefit....carbon fiber?? Hello??? But what the hell do I expect. Bullet trains been around since 1950, and most of you think elon musk's hyper loop is somehow new and never before done or thought of. Chumps....chumps the lot of ya.
the man
I don't support silk farms though haha
I like clams, considering trying snail out now that I know more about them. Trick is finding a place that serves them properly.
Clams lol
“How tough the skin of these fish is” ??? Are..... not is. Still awesome info! Amazing to hear about all these crazy interesting critters!
6:40 Spider webs are very flammable when clean!
Who was that silly bugger trying a blow torch on a mussel in a lab 🤔?
So, chitons are just biblically accurate angels?
My writer brain is absolutely loving this
Scale armor has existed for THOUSANDS of years...
2:43 "Think shapeware, but for a slug, and made of muscle" had me dying with laughter.
So all you need is seriously lot of spider silk to make a real-life spiderman
Silk is very labor intensive for quality. It mostly gets done by hand. The "infrastructure" for silk production is cheap labor across asia.
Planned obselescence is an obstacle for these improved materials
Spider silk bulletproof vest catches a .308 lol
I was once a herpes patient, but now I have finally got rid of it with the help of Ben Uda on youtube channel, with his Herbal medicine which he prepare for me,,.
Do you know what companies are doing this research? I’d like to look more into their progress.
My guy hank finna fist some insects, I'mma wait for that on the hub

Commenting for the algorithm
Animals have inspired armor or millennia. Anyone remembers scale armor? Heck, the interlocking shield formation of Greek Hoplite are also reminiscent of fish scale.
Or hippo hide and (mature adult) alligator hide used to make really good strong shields
If it ain't broke, don't reinvent the wheel. love the mixing of metaphors, a mood.
Much love from India❤❤.
Byssal threads were the last thing I expected to be fire resistant.
I guess our species is toying with "Convergent Evolution".
"It always pays to learn from the best." nature has done a lot of product testing for a very long time.
Dont kid yourself. The reason for all this armor development is war. We have puncture proof gloves to sort recycling. Just another low key push by the establishment to normalize the killing of people (not us though) for the military industrial complex.
I thought they were working on getting goats to produce spider silk in their mammaries. I swear I read that in Popular Science, over a decade ago. I guess maybe it somehow didn't work...
4:01 Chitins are the "Biblically accurate angels" of the mollusk world.
Someone needs to create an Iron Man suit with all of these features
im a simple man. i see gar, i click
"Mollusks don't experience a ton of fire" Volcanos: "Am I a joke to you?"
Probably get boiled and blanched before they ever see fire. They don't have to be on fire to die from it.
Nature is the best engineer... and also... the best economist... which is why the most prosperous system, that will reduce poverty, human suffering, prevent environmental destruction, and accelerate the advancement of humanity... is Anarcho-Capitalism.
I'm getting really sick of inventions. If you can't mass produce. They don't want it. If its something to help us all. We'll do the opposite and let the military have it. Wtf man.
Almost any problem an engineer can think of, nature has already found a solution.
Spidersilk armor doesn't sound like it would be a good replacement. See, one of the drawbacks of kevlar *is* flexibility. Even if a bullet doesn't penetrate the kevlar, the bullet may still cause a penetrative injury by pushing the kevlar, itself, into the wearer's body. Even if the vest doesn't break the skin, the impact energy can still be enough to cause internal bleeding. This is why current "armor doctrine" is to wear a hard steel plate under the kevlar, and sometimes multiple alternating layers of kevlar and steel. What's needed is something similar to a non-newtonian fluid: flexible until an impact makes it rigid, but then returns to a flexible state immediately after.
about the gloves... why not chainmail?
Chitons may be covered in eyes. But can they why?
Very cool
Dear fellow watchers of ALfirst Videos to avoid commercials in the whole video. Get the cursor drag it all the way to the last 5 seconds of the video let the video finish and then drag the cursor back to the beginning if you did it right there will be no commercials in the whole video. you can do this in any video just make sure to like the youtubers video content.
Hmmm, cheap disposable puncture proof medical gloves for medics, etc. :)
I thought those chitons were cool until I saw its many, many eyes I am now itching all over Thank you trypophobia very cool
Oh I just heard the scishow tangents episode on this. :o
hank never fails to make me smile. "im comin for ya, bugs!"
Where is muscle hank!!!!
This is not fair, they already had a 5 billion year evolution head start!
I've seen talk about spider silk kevlar since 2005. What gives?
2 is kinda silly in the real world applications. armor doesnt need to see, the pilot does and the millitary allready has soo many ways to detect things. He says, this would be the first of its kind.
What if my armor is just a suit of cabbage patch dolls wearing cabbage patch dolls? Impeccable defense, fuckin try me m8
Omg! My husband published a paper in a journal on musssel-extracted polydopamine applications in medical settings!!! I haven’t checked the citation yet I wonder if it’s his paper omg!
It wasn’t, his paper was a little different & published in 2018, but still! Mussels are cool!!
Some of them mideval armour creations with modern materials " Dragon scale" among others..amazing what they can build these days.. think there was a bullet design out there that was modeled off of a birds beak.. think this whole modeled off of nature thing goes way back to the early days of civilization.
I wonder if polydopamine would be a good sunscreen additive. Eat up more of those free radicals.
the giant horse conch weighs over 11 pounds
Wow You mean the type of armor that has been in use for almost 3000 years is actually kinda effective? Whodathunk it... And 'flame retardent' is offensive. It's "less pyrokinetically Talented"
5:42 Phew that was a close one.
What happened to the"spider-goats" I heard about a few years ago? The ones who produced the silk in their milk? That sounded like a great way to mass-produce spider silk.
I think that stuff like this is absolutely amazing
Spider silk vest are 30 years into R&D
This is fantastic, thanks A team🍻
Seeing where bizzare beasts get their material from in real time :D
I have a gar in my aquarium
I can't think of a good enough joke about the conch shell and the word "conk", joking about getting hit on the head. 😢
For the algorithm.
So you're telling me that the Armored Titan is theoretically possible?
So Chitons are the Katakuri is the animal kingdom since they their armor can see any attack coming.
Who knew that the key to flame retardants would be to eliminate all free radicals. Quick, call James Bond.
-Want to give me money for science? -No! -Military can use it -Say no more, bought
D- for not mentioning a mantis shrimp
Oh okay thank s
There's something fishy about Mussel Hank...
I grew up eating chitons in Jamaica, we called them Sea Beef and you pry them off the rocks with a knife and then roast them over a fire! We also ate a lot of conch!
Gars? You came up with this topic while researching for Bizarre Beasts? Or vice versa? LOL
Tarkus: alfirst.info/load/i4CFf6Opqr-dp4k/video
Why would you put something as horrific as "Spider Farm" out in the world? why!? Im getting all new kinds of upset rn
Ever heard of scale armor? It was used by quite a lot of cultures in ancient history!
Chitons are easy, just work on it a million years or so.
There is a video where they extracted spider silk for goats milk. They geneticlly modified the goats, dont make protein x in your milk, make protein z.
Alligator gars are good eatin, just make sure to bring a hatchet
I've been pronouncing conch wrong my entire life.
Missed opportunity to talk about spider goats that produce spider silk in their milk and can be hand spun by people....
I learn more from Hank from ALfirst than I have from any teacher I have ever had
"Organisms need to be ready for whatever nature throws at them: Predators, pounding waves, my fists. You name it. I'm coming for you, bugs."
@Depressionbomb it doesnt matter what context for torturing animals. Torturing people for fun is the same as torturing people to make medicine in mad science experiments. Same goes for animals.
@whesley hynes ah, you're one of those types. A Primitivist who take things out of context.
@Depressionbomb he said before he supports animal testing hes a sicko like all scientists. Torturing animals to cure disease is the same as for fun, they shouldnt cure disease its better for people to die of disease. People wont refuse medicine, scientists need to stop making medicins so sick people CANT use it. Far better alternative to animal testing is : sick people dying.
@whesley hynes ... What?
Ya hes a sicko he supports giving animals toxic chemicals and disease too. Making medicine isnt worth mad science experiments they shouldnt make it then people wont be able to use it when theyre sick and dying. They wont refuse medicine dr.mengeles need to stop making it so people cant use it when theyre dying.
SchiShow: Modified Silk worms! ThoughtEmporium: Nah fam, Beer Spider Beer look it up
So many scishow videos inspired by the tangents podcast!!
SKYRIM
Chiton armor look it up
I think these are just awesome, tbh. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I've always thought that bio-engineering is the ultimate level of engineering that we need to aspire to. Generally speaking, we've achieved quite a lot with metallurgical engineering over the last few millennia, but when we look around us, we see that the best engineering marvels are bio - ourselves inclusive. So why not start learning all we can from nature? 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Maximum Armour
Again another "One of the Best" videos from SciShow. Everything from the information to the "Production Values" are the standard of excellence in the medium. And one of the best ALfirst channels...EVER! Carry on...as you were...
As a gar lover I am so happy people are seeing them
wait...is it co-nk? or con-tch?
Hank and Scishow need to realize that Evolution is a false theory that will never be proven. This is because there is a design behind every object and thus, a designer behind the object. Every animal on this planet including humans have been designed and created by God.
alfirst.info/load/dYB5YZvejtiFeYE/video
I did not know conch was pronounced that way. Spongebob lied to us all.
Evolution is not the best engineer, people are. Evolution has just had a lot more time than us so we are playing catch-up.
Evolution is just the power of random over an insanely huge period of time. Human are the one who see, ask questions, experiment and create things using what they learned (literally... science)
Is it me, or have we been hearing about "coming soon" spider-silk billetproof vests for about 15 years ?
Normal Hank: I mean the animal. Not your biceps. Muscle Hank: I disagree.
I'm really curious about how they found out the mussel glue was a fire retardant
