6 Lonely Branches on the Tree of Life

When there’s only one species on an evolutionary branch, we call it a monospecific taxon. Studying these special species can help us better understand not just those sparse groups, but all life on this planet.

I was disappointed there were almost no sea creatures. Ribbon eels have a genus all to themselves (Rhinomuraena). The black ribbon eels and the blue/yellow ones were thought to be separate species, but the black ones are just younger ribbon eels. Orcas are the only recognized extant species in the genus Orcinus.

I need genetic proof of this. We need to completely 3-D sequence all (as many as reasonably possible) living plants, animals, microbes genes, proteins, and dna and rna. We need to shift through (use AI systems here) all the 3-D gene/protein data. We need to come up with the classification of all life base on this data. If the (AI assisted) analysis then supports a tree of life -- then I will accept it. Plugging organisms (old and current) to an artificial pre-ordained tree of life seems premature to me. Let's do a bottoms up from genes and 3-D structural analysis of dna, rna, and proteins to see if a tree-of-life structure even emerges. The genes and it's 3-D structure has the history (HISTORY) of each living thing. For example today cyanobacteria dna goes continuously back 3.6 to 4.1 billion years. Let's start with cyanobacteria.

Whenever you think humans will live on because we always have, just remember that all other species in our genus went extinct. The last generation of neanderthal was probably thinking the same thing. There is absolutely no cosmic guard rail preventing us from shooting ourselves in the face (sorry for the mixed metaphor). The only way to avoid that outcome is to be deliberate about it. natalism = ecocide.

@AOUGE There's also a ton of proof of evolution when looking at embryos, this is because embryos "evolve slower" than the fully developed forms of the animal, for example: human embryos still have tails, whale embryos still have leg buds, human embryos still have muscles which fully developed humans lost about 250 million years ago, fruit bat embryos still have some parts used for echo location despite fruit bats loosing the ability to echolocate ages ago, etc. (fruit bats can't echo locate because they're diurnal).

SciShow, Presenters are your medium, they are you. Your content is worth watching so need to choose your presenters sensibly; this is a presenter who always makes you difficult to watch. She projects insecurity and (involuntarily, I'm sure) is sneering and discourteous to the viewer. Nobody would mind a bland or nondescript presenter, but nobody wants to watch an ethically or visually offensive one. I feel this presenter was chosen not for appropriate merit but to tick a box or fulfill some ideological quota. I just could not watch her again- I won't be clicking again. Aardvarks aren't ungulates. They're Afrotheres, more closely related to elephants, hyraxes, and manatees than to ungulates. Even Wikipedia has this right. The 2001 source is very out of date (predating the genetic resolution of modern mammals' relationships), and the 2016 source, while it mentions 'ungulates', correctly identifies aardvarks as Afrotheres. The 'ungulates' mentioned in both papers are condylarths - a polyphyletic wastebasket taxon (that is correctly identified as such in the later paper) - but in this video 'the ungulates' are presented as a valid taxonomic group and relatives of aardvarks, erroneously implying that aardvarks are more closely related to living ungulates, perissodactyls and artiodactyls. Please do better scishow!

@Solomon Smith-jones so evolution is an assumption? not a scientific theory? if u cannot reproduce the conditions of "first life", then anything after is an assumption, not a scientific theory? provide observable proof of evolution. oh, that is right. u can't. But yet a scientific theory DEMANDS observable proof. waiting.

    2. Christopher Parks
      Christopher Parks
      11 ditë më parë

@michael evolution is not the study of how life originated, and nothing about the theory of evolution seeks to answer the question of how life started. How life started and how life changes are 2 entirely separate phenomenon. We don't know how life started. We _do_ know how life changed over time. Miller-Urey experiment is related to the question of how life started. Evolution is not the study of how life started.

    3. michael

@Solomon Smith-jones - u bore me. evolution isn't related to proof of how life started, that science cannot prove? miller urey? the basis of the foundation of the THEORY of evolution? SCIENTIFIC THEORIES REQUIRE OBSERVABLE PROOF. please prove. stop wasting my time.

Miller-urey isn't related to evolution, it's about abiogenesis which is different thing. Sure we aren't sure how the first cell came to be, but we are sure that once the first cell appeared evolution took place.

@You only Die when you get killed This is unfortunately common these days. If you want to just have a base-level understanding, then the videos on channels like Scishow and CrashCourse are sufficient, as they basically match a decent high-school-level explanation. They briefly go through all facts about the history of racial thought in history and science, and sometimes delve into some neat little details about biological quirks. Unfortunately, this is not a subject I'm very read-up on, so I don't have a single reputable source or book to really sum-up such a complicated subject. However... rationalwiki.org/wiki/Racialism Now, so note: Rationalwiki is not an unbiased source. It's a site that specifically approaches things from the perspective of countering pseudoscientific/reactionary/fringe narratives for pleasure. However, that page on racialism is one of the better ones on that site, at least for the purposes of starting an understanding on what "Race" is. It presents various racialist arguements in a compact form, contrasted against scientific evidence and history. It is, at least, an introduction to the conversation and terms like phenotypes, clines, haplogroups and the various biological arguements that come up when talking about race at a philosophical level, which I think is a more useful approach than the equivalent Wikipedia-page on "Scientific Racism".

@Apex Thank you i tried that but honestly I do not know where to look or what to type in to find out . Whenever I search it up I get results similar to "are N***** the closest to apes" or something of the like. I'm pretty sure it is because of my phrasing (I am not proficient with English) but most of the info I get is more akin to racism rather than informative.

@You only Die when you get killed I gave a very simplified answer. Honestly best you do your own research from reputable sources instead of learning this from youtube comments.

What a load of nonsense. The "tree of life" only exists in the minds of evolutionists, it cannot be found in nature.
