5 Ways Biology Is Transforming Buildings

This video was created in partnership with Bill Gates, inspired by his new book “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster.” Find out more here: gatesnot.es/3qLlFgq
Throughout history humans have come up with lots of different ways to build shelters for themselves. But sometimes, inspiration for better construction materials comes from nature, in structures you might not expect - like the scales on a fish or the sweat glands in our own skin!

2:19 I wonder if it retains it's anti-fire properties after being exposed to high heat once. "the fibers start to melt, kind like how sweat glands make sweat.." But sweat glands don't melt. There are already existing technologies that capitalism is already holding back. For example, reversible heat pumps ("air conditioners" that can pump heat in instead of out) During moderately cold temps above freezing, heat pumps are much more efficient for warming than resistant heat etc. There is also the option of Geothermal heat pumps for when things are below freezing. One problem is that to have safe effective refrigerant for a heat pump, there are only a few companies to look to that all charge alot making use of their never ending patents to profiteer.

Gone are the days when biologists were looked down on as studying the easy science. With the growth of molecular biology in some 70 years ago we see the shift in medicine follow to treat the body with greater understanding of the physiologic pathways. Decades ago Janine Benyus began teaching engineers the benefits of biomimicry. She described how to go beyond a point where technology had reached a design limitation. Her lectures focused on where to seek the answer in nature, nature that had 3.8 billion years to field test the concepts in evolving ecosystems. She pointed out the kinds of possible questions to ask. How do living organisms adapt to prevent mineral scaling build up in their structure as marine organisms? How does nature adapt to minimize energy? How to make room temperature ceramics without high temperature kilns like abalone shells and diatoms shells? How to adhere to slick surfaces without adhesives likes geckoes or spiders? How to shed dirt with rain drops like lotus plant leaves? How to redesign ecosystems without fatal disruptions by the use of water like beaver dams? www.ted.com/index.php/talks/janine_benyus_shares_nature_s_designs.html www.biomimicryinstitute.org/ www.asknature.org/

Biology is based on and depends on torturing animals injecting them with disease. Thats crucial to their field. So biology is evil and all biologists are responsible even the ones that dont torture. Theyre still part of an evil field. The whole field isnt animal torture like your whole body isnt a jugular vein but if you cut the jugular vein youre dead. If you cut out animal testing biology is dead. So biology is evil and chemistry, psychology, medicine. Theyre all dr.mengeles and should be puished for their atrocities the same as other mad scientists.

That glass one was wishful thinking I think..... More like a fisherman's tale than a fish scale. What's the shore hardness of this new product? How does it compare to toughened or heat strengthened glass hey? Lamination usually only changes the breakage pattern of glass. It doesn't change its strength. Cutting lines and notches is a whole diff area and again, would usually reduce its mechanical strength rather than increase it......I'm dubious....

Structural Technician here, how would this fire resistant concrete perform structurally during the fire? If the reinforcing melts the concrete will lose a lot of its strength. We rely on that strength to carry the self weight of the building as well as all of its contents and equipment to the footing. How would this concrete perform that function during the fire and until a crew could enter after the fire to chip away and reinstate that specially reinforced concrete?

I have a good method to add to Mr Gates' list of things to help avoid climate disaster... Don't build a palatial mansion for personal use. And then, especially, don't install a heating system under the driveway of said mansion. Followed up directly by not filling it with entirely frivolous, automated, computer controlled electrical tech. Not hording the equivalent economic resources of a developing nation would also definitely help. Especially given that a large part of why the developing world does as much damage to the environment as it does is largely because it is dirt poor. Probably also doesn't help that as one of the world's largest private investors, he is actively driving the "generate investor value" culture that leads to the environmentally and socially destructive corner-cutting behaviour of modern corporations. Honestly, a centi-billionaire giving out about how the world can "work together" to not destroy itself is like a Catholic priest writing a book about childcare. Or Smaug the Golden writing a book on charity. I applaud the sentiment, but an iota of self-awareness wouldn't go amiss.

The polymer shifting is an interesting thought, but I have a slightly better idea. How about instead of expensive silver polymers, we instead use photochromic dye films? You might know them better as Transition lenses, and as they respond specifically to direct and semi-direct UV light, they would have the added benefit of not applying a heat conductive metallic silver material to a window in a hot environment, while also keeping windows fully see-through, just shaded. They would also have the benefit of not significantly reducing your light levels when you're dealing with a shaded window. The hazard of this, and of the polymer coating as well, is that in both cases, you're reducing your incoming light level, which increases the need for relying on electric light, which generates more heat IN the home, to say nothing of the increases in CO2 emissions due to the increased wear on the power grid.

Hey, we could also stop with this whole capitalism thing -- capitalist corporations are the worst offenders by a massive amount, and the incentives of how capitalism works only keeps it going. To that end, Gates, Bezos, Musk, Zuckerberg, et al could be relieved of their wealth -- they can keep _a_ home of modest size and maybe a single million. The rest goes toward climate change solutions, health care, funding unions, and affordable (or free) housing for those in need. Oh, and we can just tax all income over a million dollars by like 99%. Because there's no need for more than that to have a _very_ comfortable life. And they're still rich!! So, really, everyone wins.

I wonder if the concrete products are made with the normal type of concrete with stone aggregate or the more temperature resistant light-weight concrete developed about 30 years ago using small polymer beads instead of the stone. Replacing the stone with polymer reduces the weight a lot, and because the beads can compress or expand a little it greatly reduces cracking in the concrete. While I've seen projects made with it, I've need seen it in widespread use in the building industry.

Cool and all. I hope we all keep in mind though that technology alone is not a way out of our current climate and ecological crisis. We can't solve all of our problems by just making more stuff, consuming more and more. We should take the technologies as aides to help achieve the overall changes needed, not a substitute for them. Not to mention these crises are also social in nature - how you going to get people to accept higher taxes on gasoline for example if a car is still basically a requirement and you're not helping improve people's income.

These are all nice ideas but very unlikely any will become mainstream in buildings. To change anything in construction you need to have a lot buy in from multiple groups of people. No one wants to be the real world test subject. People do what they know works not something that should work in theory. If things go wrong in a building it can cost a lot of money or even someone’s life.
