This Valentine’s Day weekend, we'd like to tell you a deep-sea shrimp love story that begins with a sponge, and two shrimp - and ends in forever.

@Mister Hat they show you the video first. If you watch the ad after, it is by choice......numb nuts.
🎶"Despite all my rage, I am still just a shrimp in a cage!"🎶
I'm so sick of ads for "brilliant." Thumbs down.
Two shrimp and a sponge walk into a bar. How many make it out alive?
Seriously Japan? Seriously?? 😆
I bought a pair of these sponges as an anniversary gift for my hubby who loves all things ocean.
You could almost say that shrimp was "sponge worthy"
So that's why I saw small shrimp in one of this on Animal Crossing!
Permanent work from home? Doing nothing but reproduce and eat? Sign me up
Things get really interesting when one of the shrimps dies and the other one floats the sponge away with a million balloons
In Soviet Russia, sponge eats you.
Sponge Motel: "VACANCY"
Wow Asian cultures really like to kill unique things don't they
You can check out any time you like but you can never leave.
Finding Nemo spinoff.
Interesting and something I didn't know, car hop trays from amazon stay safe.
Listening to hank is always super relaxing. Love scishow and all the great work everyone does!
Spongebob having a great time
Yeah, my luck I'd be stuck in their with another guy. Don't drop the soap.
🤣🤣🤣
These sponges are like mortgage.
goddamn people will support someone acting like a twat but ofc scishow needs to flog sponsorships...
"Here is a beautiful wedding gift that shows how marriage essentially is a sentient prison that will never let either of you go, even if one of you dies. And when your babies grow up they will leave you but you won't be able to follow because you are stuck in that prison. Hope you have a lovely day!"
My thought exactly!! Like WTH ☠️
"And as dainty as it looks, this structural design is actually super strong. In fact, it's what makes it possible for these sponges to withstand the extreme water pressure deep in the ocean." Citation required. I don't think this fact is actually a fact.
what if accidentally 2 males enter and don't notices
Walking up to a house with its previous owners decomposed carcasses laying around on our honeymoon day: "Great, our forever home, babe!"
This gift-giving aspect makes me wonder if their CITES status having not been evaluated is going to bite them in the... um... do sponges have butts?
Shrimps prisoners of love!
Is it co-dependency if neither of you can physically leave?
"Young shrimp couples" Me=forever alone 😂😳
1:10 You evidently do not understand how organisms live in the deep ocean. They do not need to withstand the "extreme pressure", because they are part of it. The same happens to a scuba diver, as he descends he equalises the pressures in his lungs, and therefore do not have to resist the "extreme pressure" Deep diving whales is a total different kettle of fish.
That's why the divorce rate is so low with shrimps, they're stuck together...
so...that sponge is a deep sea equivalent of...Motel 6?
Aw this is so romantic, great valentine video
Am Japanese, literally never heard of this until now but guess I know what to bring to the next wedding lol
I may not have a Valentine today, but if I did they would probably gift me deep-sea sponge skeleton .
Does that mean the Shrimps are Farmers or the Spongers are Herders?
adds new meaning to "till death do you part,,,
introverted shrimps!
Anyone else read the title and think of "The Dot and the Line"? Edit: I just realized the entire thumb is a total homage to Chuck Jones. Nice going, SciShow!
Extreme stockholm syndrome
Damn, I came to learn but also got a story as well
I bet the glass sponge gifts aren't sustainable and the love story will be come tragic once the shrimp are no longer able to find enough sponges to sustain their population and both populations crash
They are doing lifelong quarantine, which may become our lifestyle too.
Shrimp goes simp
Why are so many new elements suddenly being discovered?
This description made me think of some of the plots of the Three Body Problem series.
I just realized today that hank green is direktly related to john green which kinda blew my mind
Is this like the 2 girls, 1 cup meme?
Finally a video that is not about the CCP virus.
first
Happy valentine, biology style.
Okay so this is the best Sci show can give for valentines
For the algorithm.
TY 😊
I fail to see how their strong structural design is relevant to water pressure. Deep sea creatures don't have to worry about lungs or other gas filled cavities that can implode under pressure. And even if they did it would already be at equilibrium since they were born down there.
Is anyone getting a #vivarium vibe on this?
I can't help to wonder. If one of the pair dies... will the other shrimp be stuck, alone, until it simply dies as well?
Crab Check: Maybe? I’m not sure if that is actually a crab at 0:23.
I'm failling to understand why do deep sea organisms need to have some adaptions for "the crushing pressures"? especially if they spend their lives at the same depth the pressure shouldn't change that much and their internal pressure would be in equilibrium with the outside. Is there some pressure constraints on the stability of DNA, RNA or proteins (or some other reasons)?
Yeah, whoever wrote the script goofed and is perpetuating a misunderstanding about how pressure works. Humans need super strong vessels to survive in the deep but that's only to maintain a sea level pressure internal atmosphere. For the critters adapted to live at depth the spicules make them less appetising to predators while structurally supporting their near neutrally buoyant flesh. There are some incredibly delicate deep sea creatures. SciShow writers should be a little more careful deploying their facts.
I wondered the same thing and it turns out proteins/enzymes/membranes do work differently at different pressures but I couldn't find any reason why the pressure would necessitate a harder glass skeleton.
I've often cut sponges near the shore and found it full of small crabs and shrimp
Subhanallah! Look how perfectly created!
Waiting for the BL fanfic of Larry and Spongebob.
spongebob... larry...
Thanks! NOW I know what I want for my 20th anniversary... ♥️
So these shrimp have been in quarantine for thousands of years.
Only 1 pair of shrimps live in a sponge or there can be multiple?
Love story or prison, eh? Asking everyone the hard hitting Valentine's Day questions...
"suggested: Carnivorous Sponges" W H A T
It's kind of like being stuck in your house with your partner during a pandemic, forever.
Shame there are not more videos with this channel...cause it's kinda boring
I absolutely love this episode thank you guys for all the amazing content.
Well, I don't usually leave a comment on SciShow videos, but this was pretty different. Sponges, and Shrimp. That's a pretty fascinating life cycle. Evolution is weird.
So this is the SciShow St. Valentine's Day submission. Nice.
❤️
Some of us are like shrimp: in love and homeowners. Others, like myself, are like sponges: sedentary filter feeders.
Aren't we all sedentary filter breathers atm?
You think eventually these guys will become 1 creature?
Hey SpongeBob: explain!!!!!
this guy's such a nerd... i love it
As a freshwater shrimpkeeper, this is actually so interesting since it seems like the closest thing to monogamy in shrimp
I also keep shrimp and this video was awesome
Why did I find this so sweet 🥺😭
That's what human do when they cage animals.
This relationship reminds me to japanese music video titled Prisoner of Love.
Love the beautiful hint of sarcasm Hank!
This season on House Hunters.....
The house.... Becomes the hunter!
I’d love a series all about wildlife symbiosis.
🤣🤣
+++++
😂🤣😂😭😭
Somehow a little cute
To be fair, the love story/prison dynamic characterizes most relationships.
You call it prison. The shrimp call it heaven.
SHRIMP. HEAVEN. NOW!
A Love Prison
Spongebob's lesser known, phallic-looking evil cousin, trapping creatures for its' food sources... :P
Shrimptastic video.
When I moved into my house, the remains of the previous owners were still here. Nothing wrong with that.
Kinda like marriage.....trapped until you die! 🤣🤣🤣
Wow!that is really interesting!
Sponge prison,lol
I hope that the shrimp couple die together - it'd be kinda sad if one was left alone, trapped with their ex-partner's corpse.
New idea for the name of the video: One Sponge Two Shrimp.
This is beautiful and depressing at the same time. Makes me think of the song i lava you.
@Greg Hale thats funny! I think there is a movie called Larvae Island or something like that. I had no idea that cool stuff exists like this in the ocean. Now i feel like the little mermaid, wish I could be part of that world. Zues Greek Mythology. Im not so sure its a myth. All the mythical stuff has came to life in my world.
I believe your thinking of I Larva You
Humans have already done this in the 1970's. They imprisoned a goldfish inside the high heels of a runway supermodel.
When Scishow said the Japanese people give them as a wedding gift, i was thinking.......sharp glass sponge makes terrible sex toys.
Ah, those wacky lovable Japanese and their traditions and festivals...
Come all you young sailor men, listen to me I'll sing you a song of the ... shrimp and the sponge??
The big neon "VACANCY" sign is lit up at the ol' shrimp motel.
