Seymour might have had better luck had he raised one of these Bornean plants instead of a giant Venus flytrap. Instead of evolving to eat animals, they’ve evolved to play nice in exchange for their nutrient rich feces.

The Carnivorous Plants That Gave Up Meat for Poop
1 152 Shikime 116 mijë
Thanks to all of you who are pointing out that we mistakenly referred to tree shrews as rodents! They are actually their own, cool, unique group of mammals (order Scandentia). We apologize for the error!
Me a normal person: thats a squirrel
You forgot to mention the nectar of Nepenthes lowii contains laxatives to always induce pooping whenever the animal feeds on it.
Your welcome, and I'm sorry... I realize too late that my way of pointing it out was a tad bit rude and ass like, I apologize for that... I tend to be... Over proud sometimes when it comes to knowledge. I love your channel, you have very good content that is always interesting and full of knowledge. I don't ever notice many slips and I coukd have been a little more tactfully in my comment.
One organism's waste is another organism's poopourri
What about the proposed group euarchonta, to link the tree shrews to other current living groups? Is not as catchy as rodents though...
Nature is amazing. Procceeds to evolve toilets for rats.
Imagine if every plant in existence just ate poop directly from the butts of animals. No more manure which has to get absorbed by roots in the ground, and every animal would have a personal toilet.
I love nepenthes :) I've got a whole back garden full of them! No Rajah obviously, given how endangered it is, but I think one of the ones I have may be a cross with some rajah in it (I've got too many to keep track of what I have & what I just looked at & wished I had the space to house & money to buy at the carnivore plant meeting). They're great plants :))
Vegan people
Nature is amazing.
If bats evolved to be an intelligent species they'd probably think that a generous bat God made the entirety of creation just for them to be at the very pinnacle of it.
Have an animal fall into your pitcher, and you'll eat for a day. Have an animal continuously poop in your pitcher, and you'll eat for a lifetime.
imagine releasing guano as you sleep
If American do it, global warming will instantly be reversed
Once again, I am amazed and disgusted by nature
So those tree shrews use the picture plant toilets like Butters uses a regular toilet.
Ummm.... so back to normal....
Thought that said coronavirus
NOOOOOOO I can't believe you just said that. Tree shrews are NOT rodents, there are more closely related to primates and are probably very similar to what the ancestors of primates looked like. They even have human-like ears.
There is a price to be paid for curiosity. I paid that when I looked at this picture 2:28 and the imagery that was invoked into my mind was more than enough to sate whatever lingering curiosity I had. There’s truth in the saying “there are some things you are better off not knowing.” I guess.
Coincidentally, I am watching this while taking a dump.
When you think you've heard everything within the wacky world of life, life brings you a new lesson
The line for the female tree shrews to use the pitcher plant is twice as long as the line for the guys.
Animals to the pitch plant: wanna be my toilet? Pitcher plant: yes please.
Toilet plant?
Pitcher plants are full of sht.
Nice 👌
so basically a natural toilet and sewage system
Wait... Plants prefer fertilizer over meat? 🤯
it's not fertiliser! Fertiliser is absorbed through the roots, try to fertlise their roots & they die from it!
Woah, woah, woah. Treeshrews ain't rodents.
Ya know I've actually asked the same question.
I knew about this already. Thanks, Ze Frank!
Hardest choice I've ever had to make
Nature's out house! 😂
Biggest carnivorous plant? Rafflasiea anyone?
You guys should do a video on Monocot-first theory.
The shrew toilet... Mind blown. 😳 Like evolution is just... Wow
The lesson is, our toilets should be converting our feces into nutrients.
I love this channel
The words "nectar toilet" totally cracked me up.
Thankyou so much for making this episode and making sure the species were named and displayed correctly!
2:20 - Treeshrews are not rodents. two separate orders. Google "order" as an animal category.
finally, animals got public toilets
Another thing to be proud about from Indonesia's biodiversity. Pitcher plant? More like toilet plant...
Pitcher plants of Borneo really show a dedication in nature
one very important point as to why there are so many types of carnivorous plants in Borneo is due to the fact that despite being a tropical rainforest, the soil is very poor in nutrient. and since it's very old (the rainforest), plants and animals have unique ways to adapt and survive with it's very limited resources.
I had to read the title like 4 times before I realized it wasn’t “caronavirus” plants.. fml
Oohh.. Men, i'm sure the pandemic was over
Really fascinating🌻
Crab Check: No. There are no crabs in this video.
wait, don't all plants actually eat feces?
more or less, but these plants actually use digestive enzymes to eat it
Natural toilet seems legit. Let's convert our toilet to this.
Lowes? No, it’s Low-ee-Eye if that makes sense
"Lowe's" as in belonging to Lowe. Common names suck lmao
Yum. Poopy!
plants went mgtow
I can't decide to name my Punk Rock band "Flesh or Feces" or save it for our Album title.
Mannn.. frick figs
What happens when you give those plants human poop??
Little Shop of Horrors did warn us.
Nice video! De-dramatizing the plants haha :)
So nature invented toilets way before we did
Some bromiliads do this too with frogs
You should do an episode about the research David Sinclair has conducted in the Havard lab about rejuvenation and longevity! An out-there subject in science, that is very interesting! I hope that yall will make one about it soon. I saw that you made one about telomeres about 8 years ago.
domestication
I hope the AntsCanada channel has a video about diving ants! :O It probably would be way too complicated to take care of a terrarium filled with diving ants, nepenthes and other organisms needed for the foodchain.
Been after SciShow Poo for ages yaiy!!!
Imagine being that plant, what a life that would be, nature's toilet.
That is how the Tree Shrew do...do.
haha Veganism is soooo out. The real Hipsters now practise Feceism...
Man these plants didn't meet their needs, they meat their needs.
nature toilet - i'm gonna dump a load next time i go jungle
Props on keeping a straight face (and voice) while saying "fully mature shrew toilet", among other gems. I wonder how many takes it took to make this episode! I think I'd never make it. :P
💚💚💚
Coevolution at work here! *_Nothing_* goes to waste in nature. 💩 💕 ☮ 🌎 🌌
Well, you can only eat an animal once. Kudos to random mutation for correctly shaping pitchers to attract nitrogen producing animals in specific ways without actually knowing what nitrogen is, understanding an excretion process, echo location or being aware of the particular animals and their sizes.
This channel has more narrators' faces than the images about the topics. Please step up your quality. There are many lesser known science channels (and has fewer subcsriptions) with animation.
as a wise man once said: "if there is a hole in nature, someone will find it , and poop in it."
So basically diving ants eat poop soup
-Money- Nitrogen does not stink
Evolution is so incredibly amusing in its inventiveness! ...even when it's about using poop as nutrients ;P
PLANT TOILET PLANT TOILET
Life is so fascinating and complex And wierdo We need to be thankful for this life on this planet .. honestly.. its not about religion or where you from, you only got one life so enjoy and make it enjoyable for others, if its just not burning down the forest that holds poopeating flowers..
Vegans in a nutshell
Well the traps ARE shaped like toilets so might as well 🤷🏼♀️
Nothing like a toilet shaped plant 🪴
Very nice. I too am an expert in poop stuff. I just had a crazy diarhea and boi my research shows that poop is faster than lightning.
Look at me - I'm the toilet now!
nice
You tell me that there are plants that "eat" poop; yeah sure nature is weird I'll believe it. But then you show them to me and these plants actually loOK LIKE TOILETS! WTF?!
Oh, that's why they look like a toilet bowl...
Humans, take note.
I dunno, sounds like a pretty shitty diet.

In Homer's voice][ Mmmmmmmm pooooop
next time i walk in Borneo i know where to poop let help nature XD
How do you guys research these topics?
@Sci Show Sigh. I got a near heart-attack thinking SciShow actually replied to me. Stop scamming under their name yo
it's a toilet. oh my god. nature made a real actual toilet. it's not right, I dont trust evolution at all
but how does the plant even know whereabouts the shrew's ass is, or how to may be shaped, in order to form the correct type of shrew-a-potty???
bats sleeping in pitcher plants is adorable
What would happen if humans pooped into one of them?
These “living toilets” are gonna be used by me in either a fantasy story where a nature tech society has large toilet picture plants in place of our toilets or maybe a future scifi where we genetically engineer one of these plants for a future version of toilet
@Sci Show what!
Such a nice symbiosis Thank you for that :))
SciShow? more like ShitShow

"vegan plant"
My brain read Coronavirus Plants 🤦
I wish we had natural toilets..
The last one is almost a doctrine of signatures setup.
