Why These Bees Just Keep Staring at Flowers

1 095 Shikime 110 mijë

You might have wondered why bumblebees stop for a moment to stare at the flower they were just interacted with. Are they cherishing all the good times they had together, or is this behavior serving a biological purpose?

Bees that look chunky and fluffy like bumble bees cover several species (with different markings and hair arrangements otherwise and other differences) - I thought some of those species are solitary whilst others live in colonies.

Here's a hypothesis: Smaller bees have more dancing friends, telling them where they can go, helping them like Google Maps, or like having someone else drive. Larger bees have fewer helpers, so they need more personal memory. In this vein, when someone else drives me somewhere, often I can't recall how to get there on my own, even if I've been there many times. Meanwhile, if I drive, even just once, I can usually remember how to get there.

the answer might be similar to a Question I have: Some flying insects like bees have a behavior of sometimes hovering on the spot. They expend energy and seems to get nothing in return for it which I find odd. At first I figured that they might have found a warm spot that they like to warm up in but that just doesn't sounds right to me anyone know the answer?

Curing disease isnt worth torturing animals thats the same as torturing animals for fun. They shouldnt cure disease its better for sick people to die as nature intended. No they wont refuse medicine duh, dr.mengeles need to stop MAKING medicine so sick people CANT use it. Existing medicine wont be affected anyway its already been tested on animals duh so banning animal testing now wont affect it.

Weird hypothesis. Assumes a LOT about the inner workings of bee cognition. Maybe look at differences in the bee's ability to detect these differences which correlates to size. I mean, the weight of the better nectar wouldn't change the fact that the energy potential of the same mass of nectar would still be higher on the more surgery samples. It's sort of how sugar works, relative to water anyway.

Anyone who has ever played an MMO will understand exactly what's going on here... at low level, you gather resources from every resource point available, and you have one zone to run around in. These big bees are max level, they only want the rare materials and have to mark where you can find them in the high level zones. ...I think I watch too much TierZoo.

Cool video. Sooo.... I am not sure what you guys had to omit, or maybe what the researches did not publish.... or worst case - what they did not think of. I would say perhaps the researchers did not consider another factor - their age. After all - are the bigger bees also OLDER - or at least I would speculate. (this is where my personal ignorance may be coming into play). I mean, the idea that any worker, bee or not, with more experience may come up with better methods - should not be too surprising across the various species of the animal kingdom. That of course should line up another whole line of questioning - do bee's change behavioral patterns and methods for executing various activities as they get more experience. After all, we know they CAN learn - but I would think the concept of them placing more emphasis on learning (or what they learn) could be some very fascinating research. So, not sure if my thoughts are too much dunning-kruger vs. outsider effect - but regardless it would curious to know. Regardless, thanks for the video.

Interesting video but I have a question if anyone can answer it please? So my first reaction to the size disparity was that a bigger bee has higher energy requirements (I presume for flight) and so they have a greater incentive to look for more calorific flowers. Does that come into it at all?

Is it reasonable to make another assumption, that since maybe there are way less bumblebees that forage out and collect nectar, it would be beneficial if they spend more of that time on flowers with better nectar. On the other hand, there are so many smaller bees that they don't have to be picky, they can collect from any flower because there's so many of em?

How great to know that! Here in Brazil, bumblebees are called "mamangava", an indigenous name. Only them, various species in the genus Bombus and Xylocopa, pollinate passion fruit flowers. If there are no bumblebees, pollination has to be done by hand. For this reason, passion fruit producers collect bumblebee nests in the forest and "invite" them to live on the plantation.
