5 Tiny Bots Inspired by Nature

1 472 Shikime 149 mijë

The creation of tiny robots could enable the exploration of new frontiers, from the tightest spaces in the human body to the most remote ecosystems. Here are 5 little bots that draw inspiration from nature to get the job done.

I've always imagined that internal medical *Nanobots* would use *_Biomimicry,_* though my own concept was more like a súú tiny *Squid-bot* which would use it's mantle fins in either saggitate or skirt-like configurations (whatever works best for the viscosity of the fluids it would functioning in) to move, while carrying sensory & manipulatory systems (in a closed configuration) behind it, much like a squids tentacles. • Independently bots having only limited intelligence, but in swarms of hundreds/thousands of networked individuals, being capable of some incredible feats. • Having chemo-sensors to help it navigate (much like a single-celled organism). Optical cameras may not function particularly well at those scales due to the optical wave size of visual light, but may still have a use in some circumstances. • Having myriad varieties of forms/configurations (at differing scales) for different jobs within the body: such as a needle & syringe to administer medications at precise locations, or a group of manipulators to capture pathogens, perhaps even an internal library of Cytokines / RNA Messenger Fragments / Hormones / etc. to trigger Epigenetic responses in certain cells. • Powering their internal systems would, of course, be a major challenge, however I suspect that a combination of an onboard hydrogen battery &/or perhaps a secondary chemical sugar system for more energetic functions. • Their bodies constructed of a soft pseudo-muscular polymer, over a semi-rigid internal carbon/silicate skeleton. All in all, the potential for various types of medical *Nano;bots* is truly extraordinary & these preliminary experiments are providing essential data for their eventual development.

Dear SciShow, You have missed mentioning two of the most advanced tiny robots. Please see below: 1. A flexible microsystem capable of controlled motion and actuation by wireless power transfer (doi.org/10.1038/s41928-020-0384-1); (alfirst.info/load/e2ekcWfOld12n4k/video&ab_channel=TUChemnitz) 2. Electronically integrated, mass-manufactured, microscopic robots (doi.org/10.1038/s41586-020-2626-9) They are the most advanced mini bots that can integrate microelectronic components and can be steered wirelessly

I'd like to see tiny robots go in the direction of household pest control! I'm imagining a ROCOCKROACH? Still workshopping that. ROROACH? And it would seek out the cockroaches where they hide in the walls and go Terminator-style. Or more directly and effectively deliver poisons to their nests? I'm realizing how wrong this can go. Tiny robots with lethal capabilities? It's a slippery slope. Still, the cockroaches in my building can get bold if I'm not vigilant about keeping the kitchen clean, and even then!

In the first bot, you mentioned that they were thinking of ditching the magnetic system. Might that be because there is already an active electro-magnetic current in a living body(where they intend to use the bot)? Is our nervous system strong enough to interrupt the system of a bot of that size?

PSA: Contrary to popular paranoia, Covid vaccines do NOT contain "nanorobots" just because they the virus are 70 to 90 "nanometers" in size while the respiratory droplets that carry them can be much, much larger (from fine aerosols to big ol' snotty boogers). 1:41 one mm (millimeter) equals 1 million nanometers in length. A human hair is about 75,000 nm in diameter. Sadly, this is probably something that should be made clear in this day and age.

Amazing technology. For a more dystopic (and terrifying) look at microbots, check out the last novel by Michael Crichton (of Jurassic Park fame) called, "Micro". (Yes, its reviews are not great, but bear in mind Crichton died before finishing this, and therefore the book was coauthored and completed by a different author. I still found it to be a compelling read, and has the potential of being a great 21st century movie.) Think about the movie, "Fantastic Voyage".
